چکیده

Optogalvanic effects are changes in the electrical properties of a gas discharge caused by illumination with radiation at a wavelength corresponding to an atomic or molecular transition. The resurgence of interest in optogalvanic effects stems in a large measure from the unique properties of lasers such as: the high powers, the tunability, the narrow bandwidths, and the controllability of pulse parameters. The most significant application of the effects is as a sensitive diagnostic tool for characterizing discharge processes and rate constants. However, mild discharges are ignited and extinguished using optogalvanic effects. Selected transitions produce positive optogalvanic effects (a decreased impedance), while other transitions produce negative optogalvanic. effec.ts (an increased impedance). The resonant coupling of a laser and a discharge produces a large change in discharge current per absorbed unit of energy. Preliminary experiments in Ne positive column discharges are discussed. Potential limitations on electron and current density are also presented.

Recent Advances in Optically Controlled Discharges

The recent increase in modular pulsed power systems has amplified the potential of optically controlled discharges where stringent synchronization in time is required. This interest has lead to new switching applications and concepts as well as new understanding of the switching process from a fundamental standpoint. The increasing diversity of wavelengths available has necessitated a modificat...

2.C Fast, Optically Triggered, Superconducting Opening Switches

In high-power applications, opening switches play an important role. These switches are required to carry high currents (100 A-10 MA) and operate with short switching times ( l0ms-Ions). Moreover, before opening, the switch must conduct current to a parallel circuit branch (load) and withstand the voltage across the load. If there is no load in parallel to the switch, it must absorb all the ene...

Adhesion effects on contact opening dynamics in micromachined switches

We propose a technique to measure the opening time for micromachined switches and present substantial experimental data for switches with gold–gold contacts. The data demonstrate that contact opening time increases dramatically as apparent contact area increases or as pull-apart force or contact resistance decreases. A model of opening time is also presented with model parameters that fit the e...

TWO PHOTON TRANSITIONS IN THE OPTOGALVANIC SPECTRUM OF NEON

Seventeen two-photon transitions for neon have been observed in the 580- 635 nm spectral region for use in the spectroscopic study of its higher excited levels, which are not accessible by one-photon absorption. To compare the two and one-photon absorption signals originating from the same lower level, an effort was made to record single-photon optogalvanic spectrum in the available wavele...
